This week on Excavate we speak with Brett Young, CEO and Founder of Building SP, a software development company that creates tools for virtual design and construction. His motivation for getting out of bed in the morning is knowing the things they are doing are unique in the world.

Most of us do not consider that when we are indoors, we are surrounded by pipe, conduit, and duct because they are hidden behind architectural features. Young has considered these things very seriously. During the typical planning phases, these systems are designed and drawn by clicking and dragging, but Building SP is using algorithms and AI to route these essential building components which positively affects the speed in which a building can be completed.

He is a big proponent of the younger generation getting into construction now because there is huge demand and with tech playing a bigger role, the opportunities are endless.

“We need more roads. We need more hospitals. We need more houses. That need isn’t going away no matter what we do.”

As with all our interviewees, Young mentions the importance of networking.

“In construction, we are a great big human system and we rely on the people around us. The more you network and the more you get mentored, the higher probability you will form relationships that will help you later on.”
